A Kids Perspective On The Coronavirus

Image
By Sloane Knudsen I wanted to know a little bit more about a kids perspective on the coronavirus. So I interviewed my cousin Vivi Tanner who lives in Beijing China about the coronavirus. Q: What is it like for the kids in china? A: When kids go outside they have to wear a mask, you can’t have playdates with your friends, and you don’t get to go to school. Q: Where were you when you first heard about the coronavirus? A: We were celebrating Chinese new year when I heard that we couldn’t go back to school. We would have to be doing quarantine and homeschool. We were going to go on some trips but we couldn’t go anymore because we didn’t want to risk getting stuck there. Q: How did you feel about the coronavirus when you first heard about it? Were you scared? A: I was a bit worried that we might get it but now that I’ve learnt more about it and am taking more safety precautions I feel more safe. Q: How did your friends and family feel about it? A: Our housekeeper was on a t...

Fun Things To Do in San Juan County

Image
By Rose Kartchner Have you been stuck inside during the quarantine? And absolutely dying to get outside? San Juan County, Utah has some of the best outdoor adventures there is. Even though you can’t come visit now, you can dream about it and get a head start on planning your trip down to southeastern Utah. Here’s some things that you can expect to find in San Juan County. If you’re tired of a crowded gym, and want to do some real rock climbing, you should plan a trip to San Juan County. There is an endless supply of undiscovered bouldering opportunities. They offer fun and challenging routes. Most likely, (like everything else here) you won’t see any people, and you can climb without having to wait to go on a really cool rock. Another thing you can find are ancient Native American ruins. These people left their homes around 1275 and 1300 AD, but many of their ruins still stand. You can even walk through some of them! You can find many petroglyphs and pictographs here, al...

Lets Shake Things Up

Lets Shake Things Up   by Jack Kartchner            Recently there was an earthquake in Salt Lake City. It was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake with aftershocks continuing for a long time. Maybe you felt it at your house. Maybe you have been wondering, how do earthquakes happen? I can tell you.           So how does an earthquake start? The first thing to know is that the Earth’s crust is made of lots of pieces. Think of it like this, the earth is like a puzzle it has many different pieces that connect together. These pieces are called plates. An earthquake starts when two of the earth's plates contact, slide, or bump into each other. The parts of the earth where the plates touch is called a fault line. On a fault line is where earthquakes happen. When the plates collide with each other it sends out waves, when those waves reach the surface of the earth they shake buildings and other objects on the surface of the earth.  ...

Cooking is Cool!

Animations by Holden Soelberg Pretzel Bites by Rose Kartchner Pretzel Bites are really easy, fast, and fun to make. (Plus Delicious!) This recipe makes 2 Dozen, and takes about an hour to prepare this chewy snack and dinner. You will need to make the dough first and then the topping. Kids (and other people) would like this because it takes long enough to rid boredom, but not long enough to cause boredom. It is also delicious and quick! You may need a little bit of an adult’s help, but otherwise it’s super easy! If you need more information on them, and more really good recipes, you can go to melskitchencafe.com. Have fun making these! DOUGH: 2 ¼ cups all purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon instant yeast 1 cup warm water TOPPING: ½ cup very hot water 2 tablespoons baking soda Coarse, kosher salt 3 tablespoons butter (melted)   INSTRUCTIONS:  Mix the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in a big bowl or in a mixer. What We can do to Pass the Time

By Asher Ellis Are you tired and bored? Do you have nothing to do but shout at your kids or hear your parents shout? This coronavirus era is a very difficult and confusing time. We want you to have the very best experience that you can have, even if the outside world is in terrible turmoil. In this article, we will give you a few suggestions on how to pass the time. 1. On Instagram, or anndeeellis.com, there is a site called eight minute memoir. It prompts you to flow your creative juices into writing, and write whatever it says. One day it might be to write about a magic salad that can turn you into whatever you want. Another day might be about how things are different now. Maybe a robot that becomes your friends, or a mountain that isn’t quite nonliving. There are two prompts a day, with an adult prompt (more mature) and a kid prompt (less mature). Of course, you can do either one, it is completely up to you. If you want, you can even do both! It is loads of fun, and this is o...
